Reduce Tobacco Consumption Worldwide (by Creating a Crowd Funded Project)

Project Proposal:  “The World Collection of No-Tobacco Stories”

suggestedImage72InnoCentive, the global leader in crowdsourcing innovation problems to the world’s smartest people, has recently posted a new challege which we would like to support.  The challenge:

Create an effective crowd funded project with the aim of discouraging tobacco consumption globally. This will be implemented in multiple countries, in multiple languages, simultaneously.

It must meet the requirements for submission on Kickstarter:  http://www.kickstarter.com/help/guidelines

InnoCentive has posted an AWARD of $500 USD for the best project idea. Here is a short presentation that outlines this Brainstorm Challenge.

i-Sparks participates in this challenge and we are proposing the following project:

“The World Collection of No-Tobacco Stories“

Develop a community website for those smokers who are open or willing to reduce tobacco consumption.  Once they have entered information about their smoking habits they can search and connect with individuals with similar profiles who have successfully reduced their tobacco consumption or even have quit smoking and read how they achieved this and what benefits they reaped from this accomplishment.

Have a look below how we have developed this project proposal.

Celebrating Failure, Liberating Innovation

drawing_light_bulb_with_pen_400_clr_5876           Lots of no-tobacco campaigns and technical solutions / apps are available.

           What’s missing?

  • Developing yet another technical solution or regular website can be time consuming and costly.  In addition, it may difficult to distinguish it from existing solutions or campaigns.
  • Film or alike is good but costly and time consuming.  In addition, a film / video by itself may not be viral because it cannot easily account for different cultures.  Besides it is probably filmed in English thus either limiting the audience or requiring costly synchronization.
  • Most campaigns and technical solutions are generic in a sense that they cannot be customized to the specific needs of individual smokers willing to reduce tobacco consumption.  In addition, interaction is limited as the communication channels of most website are usually one-directional.

A Crowd Funded Project

The envisioned solution should be a crowd funded project (for sites like www.kickstarter.com) with the aim of discouraging and eliminating tobacco consumption worldwide.  A campaign will (1) above all else, effectively influence people to reduce tobacco consumption, (2) be simple, (3) convince by its beauty, and last but not least, (4) be effective.

Given the described problems (see tab MOTIVATION) the proposed campaign / project should meet the following requirements:

  • inexpensive or even free
  • multilingual
  • accounting for multiple cultures
  • allow and encourage interaction online and offline
  • address individual needs and motivations of those smokers willing to reduce their tobacco consumption
  • inspiring people to discourage tobacco consumption or eliminate it altogether

Project Proposal:
“The World Collection of No-Tobacco Stories“

Develop a COMMUNITY and corresponding INTERACTIVE WEBSITE for those smokers who are open or willing to reduce tobacco consumption or eliminate it altogether.  Once they have entered information about their smoking habits they can search and connect with individuals with similar profiles who have successfully reduced their tobacco consumption or even have quit smoking and learn how they achieved it and what benefits they reaped from their accomplishments.

Have a look at our mindmap which outlines the proposed solution.  Click here.

Key Features

Smokers enter their profile including information about smoking habits, age group, location, and their motivation for reducing tobacco consumption.  Former smokers share similar information; in addition, they are asked to tell their stories.  That is, how did they accomplish their goals of reducing tobacco consumption, who supported them and what other advice would they have for smokers with similar backgrounds or in related environments?

Users can decide whether or not to stay anonymous by choosing a user name or use their real name.   Last but not least, they can state if they would be open for an open exchange of ideas or experiences or even meet in person with other community members.

Given this data, smokers can search for no-tobacco success stories which resemble their own particular situations.  Search criteria could be location, age, gender, smoking habit, motivation to quit, or benefits.

Why success stories?  Individual stories can or become personal and emotional, thus increasing the chance that people can relate to the people, their particular situations, fate and accomplishments.

Multilingual: Content is uploaded by community members in their countries using their local language.  Hence, the community would be available in several languages.  Languages to start with should include: English, Spanish, French, German; ideally, Russian and Chinese.

Additional features (optional)

  • Localization services: pick a location and find out where to find the next local community member to share your motivation, experience, issues and accomplishments.
  • Resources:  generic and country-specific lists of additional resources such as websites, treatments, etc.
  • Integration with other social networks such as Facebook, Google+, LinkedIn, Xing, Twitter, etc.
  • Benefits ticker: showing collected benefits of all community members earned by reducing or eliminating tobacco consumption altogether.  Data could be displayed in currencies or examples of products and services.

Technical Solution

  • Interactive community website
  • Open-sourced software
  • Responsive theme thus facilitating use on PC, handheld, smart phones
  • Scalable
  • Multi-language support (e.g. WPML)

Timing

  • Setup community website within 2 months (provided team and seed funding available)
  • Fulfill all prerequisites for crowdfunding launch within 3 months
  • Milestones to be defined in accordance with national or international events such as National Lung Day or World No-Tobacco Day.
Collecting stories could and should start immediately.  In order to attract a larger audience and thus collect more stories,  the launch could be part of a campaign leading to such events as the World No-Tobacco day.
  • Collecting stories and growing the site and community could continue beyond a given event.

Maintenance and Continuous Development / Growth

  • The website and community will require regular technical maintenance.
  • Content will be provided by community members.
  • Review of content should be conducted by volunteer community members.  Screened / reviewed content, i.e., stories, references, etc. could be marked separately, e.g., with a badge „quality assured“ or alike, thus introducing gaming features which are becoming increasingly popular in online communities

Audience / Target Community Members

  • Smokers who are open or willing to reduce tobacco consumption
  • Former smokers who successfully reduced their tobacco consumption or eliminated it altogether

Scope / Goal of Kickstarter Project

  • Category: Publishing
  • Scope / Goal: help finance community development, linked with specific event such as a National Lung Day, World No-Tobacco Day, etc.

Possible Value of Project

(1) Effectively influence people to reduce tobacco consumption:

  • Focus on individuals:
    • Addressing invidual motivations and needs
    • Sharing personal experiences through storytelling
  • Support by community

(2) Simplicity:

  • Enter profiles
  • Share stories
  • Search stories
  • Connecting

(3) Beauty:

  • Storytelling is one of the oldest tradition to transfer knowledge.
  • Individual stories can or become personal and emotional, thus increasing the chance that people can relate to the people, their particular situations, fate and accomplishments.
  • Global yet local: global platform with region, country and language specific sites

(4) Effectiveness:

  • Capable of adaptation and implementation in multiple countries and languages at the same time
  • Structure for self-organizing community

It would be wonderful if our project proposal would be picked by InnoCentive.  The question is what would we do next?

We believe that the project proposal has its own merits.  But we cannot do it by ourselves.  One of the keys for success will be online support by the community and others.  Please let us know if you are interested in joining.

For the time being we invite you to explore the mindmap below to find out what else is on our minds in possibly proceeding with the project proposal.

What is InnoCentive?

InnoCentive is the global innovation marketplace where creative minds solve some of the world’s most important problems for cash awards up to $1 million. Commercial, governmental and humanitarian organizations engage with InnoCentive to solve problems that can impact humankind in areas ranging from the environment to medical advancements.

What is an InnoCentive Brainstorm (Open Ideation™) Challenge?

An InnoCentive Brainstorm Challenge is a question written by a member of the InnoCentive Community to obtain access to new ideas. These “global brainstorms” tap the InnoCentive Global Solver Community and may lead to any number of outcomes, such as a new commercial application for a current product, or a viral marketing idea to recruit new customers. Brainstorm Challenges are Open Ideation, meaning that all submissions may be viewed by any Solver who has signed the Challenge confidentiality agreement. Submissions are typically a few paragraphs long and Seekers receive a non-exclusive, perpetual license to use all submissions.

In a Brainstorm Challenge, Solvers may:

  • Submit ideas of their own
  • Submit third party information that they have the right to use, and the authority to convey the right to use and develop derivative works to Seekers
  • Submit information considered to be in the public domain without any limitations on use
  • Expand on solutions submitted by other Solvers

Solvers should not reveal any confidential information in their submissions. Often the Brainstorm Challenge will be followed by one or more of the Premium Challenge types to further develop the ideas and gain Intellectual Property protection when the concept has been well-defined.

Refer to the Brainstorm Help pages for additional information about Brainstorm Challenges

CRITERIA FOR JUDGING by InnoCentive:

There is one absolute requirement. The project must meet the requirements for submission on the Kickstarter crowd funding website. There are available here: http://www.kickstarter.com/help/guidelines

This is not a requirement, but we welcome contact from individuals or organisations who are willing to contribute resources (time, energy, networks, expertise, experience, a public profile, etc).

Examples might include:

* Production of a book, album or video game, with proceeds going to

* A mass media advertising campaign

CROWD FUNDING

After InnoCentive has chosen a winning submission, the campaign will be used to create a project on crowd sourced funding platforms.

You can download a free guid to crowd funding (the “Crowd Funding Bible”) at this website: http://www.crowdfundingguides.com/

An effective model campaign will be capable of adaptation and implementation in multiple countries, in multiple languages, at the same time.

“Crowdfunding allows founders… to fund their efforts by drawing on relatively small contributions from a relatively large number of individuals using the internet, without standard financial intermediaries. Crowdfunding has been drawing substantial attention from policy makers, managers, and entrepreneurs…”
